Vermont Bans Some Utility Shutoffs

In March 2020, after Vermont Legal Aid submitted a letter requesting action to prevent shutoffs, the Vermont Public Utility Commission ordered a temporary moratorium on involuntary natural gas, electric and telecommunications service disconnections. On December 22, 2020, it was reinstated.

The Vermont Public Utility Commission again directed the state’s regulated utilities to stop any disconnection of utility service due to nonpayment of:

  • electricity
  • natural gas, and
  • landline phone bills.

This moratorium ended July 15, 2021.

Charges accrue during this time. You will have to make up the payments you missed. Consider asking your utility company for a long-term payment plan. Your local Vermont Community Action Agency can help you.
