If you can work but are not working, you may have to register at your local Department of Labor Office to be eligible for 3SquaresVT.
You do not have to register for work if:
- you live in Orleans or Essex Counties
- you are under age 16
- you are 16 or 17 and not the head of the household
- you are age 50 or over
- you have a physical or mental problem that does not let you work
- you are caring for a child under age 6
- you are caring for a person (adult or child) that needs help taking care of him or herself
- you already work at least 30 hours a week or earn at least $196.50 before taxes per week
- you are a migrant or seasonal farm worker and you will begin work in 30 days
- you are getting unemployment compensation or Reach Up
- you are a student enrolled at least half time in any training program or college and you qualify for 3SquaresVT
In addition, you do not have to take a job if:
- the job pays less than the minimum wage ($10.00 per hour as of January 1, 2017 and $10.50 per hour as of January 1, 2018)
- the job is dangerous to your health or safety
- you can't get there because of transportation problems
- there is a strike or lockout at your job
- you would have to join or quit a union to work
- the work violates your religious belief
