Does Reach up Change My Child
Support?
When you get Reach Up, you give up your right to child support to the
state. Does your ex pay child support? Are you on Reach Up?
You will get $50.00 of the
child support each month on top of your grant. The state will keep the
rest. If your ex doesn't pay, you won't get the $50.00.
If you don't get child support, the state might go after your ex to
try to make your ex pay. If you are worried for your safety or your
child's safety, you can ask the state not to go after your ex for
child support.
When you are on Reach Up, you also give up your right to getting any
back child support your ex owes you. When you leave Reach Up, you
get your right to child support back. This includes your right to any
back child support the state did not get while you were on Reach Up. The
state often makes mistakes about back child support. Call
Vermont Legal Aid
at (800) 889-2047 for help if the state is keeping your back child support and you aren't
on Reach Up any more.
Why Does the State Get to Keep
Some of My Child Support?
The state keeps the child support to pay back the Reach Up money you
get. The state is not allowed to keep more than you get from
Reach Up. If you start getting more money from child support than from
Reach Up, your Reach Up will stop.
What Happens with My Child
Support If I Go off Reach Up?
You will get your child support directly. This does not happen right
away. It takes two months for you to get the full amount of the Reach
Up once you go off Reach Up. If you think there is a problem, call
Vermont Legal Aid.
What If My Child Support Is
More Than I Get in Reach Up?
Your Reach Up will stop. You'll only get child support.
I Think I Got the Wrong Amount
of Child Support. What Can I Do?
You should call Vermont Legal Aid for help. We can see if you are
getting the right amount.
What If I'm Afraid to Ask for
Child Support Because of Abuse?
You can ask DCF not to go after your ex for child support if you
are afraid that this will cause more abuse to you or your child.
The Office of Child Support or your worker can help you with this.
Your local domestic violence group can help you with any paperwork.
You can find your local domestic violence group on the Vermont Network Against
Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault website.
Call
Vermont Legal Aid if your DCF worker still says you have to work.
